Becoming a Generous Generation

He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. — Ecclesiastes 5:10
The book of Ecclesiastes is a sobering reminder for all Christians that this world is indeed passing away (1 John 2:17). Our lives under the sun will one day end and we will stand in judgment for all that we have done in our lifetimes. It is a reminder to us that when we live for this world, our lives will add up to nothing. But when we live for eternity, we will find great reward.
This applies directly to how we manage our wealth. I am not talking about 401k or investment options. You can be fully prepared for retirement with enough to pass on to your children, and that won't mean squat in heaven. Money is indeed a thing of this world. That currency has no exchange rate in heaven.
When you love money, you will find yourself never satisfied with how much you have. Greed is an innate symptom of our sinful human nature. You either become obsessed with wanting more or you become so afraid to spend that you safeguard your wealth with 24-hour surveillance. Brothers and sisters, hear the words of Ecclesiastes: this also is vanity.
Therefore, as Christians, we must make it a practice to give generously—to invest our wealth with an eternal perspective, a kingdom mindset. We must practice the joy of sharing our blessings, especially to those who are in need. This is admittedly not easy with rising inflation, future uncertainty, and a difficult job market. Yet, when our hearts get so tied up with our financial security, anxiety dominates our thoughts and chokes out our contentment in Christ.
We can do this together. In the book of Acts, we see the church helping one another out. Generosity is not just an individual attribute. It is the mark of a vibrant church, who truly awaits their inheritance in heaven. Let us then strive to become a generous generation, marked by a bold faith that is willing to give our lives for the glory of Christ.
