To the Senior Opening Their College Decisions

Art by @jt_lettering

College decision season was a rough time. I still remember the rejections, the waitlists, and the fear of not getting in while friends were getting in left and right. I also feared being a failure. The most frequently asked question was, “Did you hear back?” and this usually just brought more stress. There was so much pressure — not just from my own expectations, but also being in a competitive environment where everyone seemed successful and aimed for prestigious schools. So, I write this in retrospect to encourage high school seniors as decisions are rolling out.

Dear High School Senior

You’ve opened your college decision, and maybe it’s not the news you were hoping for. Now, the spiral of thoughts begins: “I’m not good enough. I’m not smart enough. I should’ve tried harder. This is the end of the world. Life is unfair. If God loves me, shouldn’t He give me what I desire?”

God’s Perfect Plan for You

He does love you, and He has a perfect plan for you. If you are pursuing higher education, you’ll take your first step onto your new campus in just a few months. Wherever you go, know this: God has sovereignly brought you to this campus, and this is where He wants you to be faithful for the next couple of years.

Seek First the Kingdom of God

So seek first the kingdom of God. Not being at your dream school doesn’t make you any less effective for God’s kingdom. And being at your dream school doesn’t lessen your calling to be faithful. No matter the season, the place, or the circumstance, God calls you to be faithful.

Root Your Identity in Christ

If you seek God first and root your identity in Christ, no college decision will replace the true joy you already have. Yes, rejection will hurt, and you’ll most likely be sad and disappointed. But know that your disappointment can coexist with the security you have in Christ, your ultimate comfort and joy.

A New Chapter

So no, it’s not the end of the world. It’s the beginning of an exciting — and sanctifying — new chapter. You are enough, not because of some college decision, but because Christ loves you and died for you. Life may feel unfair, but God has blessed you with much, so count those blessings! God loves you and will give you what you need.

Trust God’s Timing and Find Your True Joy in Christ

Philippians 1:6 says: “And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” So find your true joy in Christ, and hang in there!
